Xavi retracts his statements after the defeat against Girona: “I did not mean that”

Xavi Hernandez explained his statements, which brought him many criticisms after the painful defeat to Girona in La Liga, and stressed that he did not mean what reached the minds of Barcelona fans or the press.

Barcelona lost 4/2 against Girona last Sunday in the match that was held between the two teams at Montjuïc Stadium in the 16th round of the Spanish Premier League.

After the match, Xavi stated that his team is under construction and that it is normal for Barcelona to go through ups and downs in results and performance during that period. These statements were met with a wave of ridicule and criticism.

In the introductory press conference to face Antwerp in the final round of the Champions League group stage, Xavi retracted those statements and explained them by saying: “When I say that we are under construction, it is because things must improve, with new young players.”

He added: “We came from the Europa League, but with maximum demand to win. “I mean to be consistent to achieve challenges, and I did not mean that it takes time, but rather I said that we must play better.”

He concluded: “A month and a half ago I already said that I think we are halfway to making a great Barcelona. “If we hadn’t won the league and the Super Cup last year, I probably wouldn’t be here.”
