President Joan Laporta explained in the Assembly that, despite Barça’s financial situation, it was decided not to sell Frenkie de Jong for around 100 million euros.
It is true, but the player’s position also had a lot to do with it, as he flatly refused to leave for Manchester United and avoided entering into negotiations that would leave him outside the Blaugrana club.
Barça’s policy has always been clear and involves maintaining the players considered essential to form the starting eleven, something that does not happen at Real Madrid.
Florentino Pérez does not tremble in his legs to sell footballers no matter how star they are. He did it with Cristiano Ronaldo or Casemiro and has dispensed with Benzema so as not to pay him a very high fee. Choose well the assets to sell to obtain a significant economic return and sign young people,
At Barça, the two most sought-after players on the market are Pedri and Gavi. And they are by far: Bayern, Chelsea, PSG, United… important clubs have them as potential future players in case the Blaugraba club were forced, one day, to get rid of them out of necessity. Easily, the two players would pass the 100 million euros with peace of mind.
But Barça does not give in. It is true that this issue has been debated internally, but the clear conclusion is that these two names are taboo. They do not touch each other and the idea is to prevent them from leaving in the short and medium term.
And that is why the two could revise their contract upwards when they recently renewed, losing money with higher proposals outside of Barcelona.
