Barcelona is facing a more than delicate situation. Its participation in the next Champions League is in danger.
UEFA’s decision will be known in ten days, but some precedents (KF Skenderbeu, Pobeda, Besiktas, Fenerbahce) and the declared desire for a competition outside of any doubt point to a Barcelona without UCL in 2023-24, a punishment that by way of ineligibility it can only be for one season.
Another thing is what happens with the file opened in its day by UEFA and that goes hand in hand with the possible responsibilities, decreed by ordinary justice , in a process that will be much slower.
MARCA has been reporting since the ‘Negreira case’ broke out , regarding the fact that the presence of the Barça club in the next season, in this case, the Champions League, is in danger.
UEFA reacted and opened a file for a situation that it considered anomalous and that violated the principles of the competition.
In addition, and in parallel, any team that wants to participate in European competitions must be admitted by the highest European football body, a circumstance that will be known as of June 12 , when from Nyon it will be examined on a case-by-case basis.
The purpose of that open file was none other than to advance the work and not wait for that June 12 to examine the documentation of the ‘Negreira case’ and delay a decision that directly influences a competition that will soon start up.
The resolution is expected to arrive from the 12th , with time for possible claims from Barcelona, which is already preparing the ground for the possible sanction
As ‘ABC’ has published , the report points out that Barcelona has failed to comply with the basic precepts of the competition, that is, that it has tried to influence the outcome of football matches.
Mirjam Koller and Jean-Samuel Leuba see signs of them and have transferred it that way , but now it will be the Disciplinary Committee , an independent body, and the one that has to decide if Barcelona does not meet the necessary requirements to be chosen among the teams that participate in the next Champions League.
Laporta’s meeting with Ceferin
Joan Laporta traveled to Slovenia last April , with the sole objective of making Ceferin see the innocence of Barça, but the president of UEFA, in this case, is no more than a mere spectator of something that he has described like: “The most serious thing he has seen since he was in the world of football” .
In the UEFA statutes, specifically in article 50.3, the right to veto a club is included. “If an activity has been committed to organize it, influence the result of a match at a national or international level”, something that, according to the inspectors in charge of collecting the information in the case, is the case.
The punishment, as MARCA has learned , would not be towards the Spanish competition but towards the Catalan club, so that place would not be lost in the highest continental competition, which in this case would go to Villarreal.
According to what MARCA has learned, Barça has not received any notification about this situation and UEFA will talk about it when there is a final decision and it is known whether or not the Barça team plays the next Champions League.
