Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller poured out his anger after Lionel Messi won the 2021 Ballon d’Or at the expense of Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, his Bavarian teammate.
Messi was crowned with the seventh Ballon d’Or in his history after he beat Lewandowski by 30 votes, which caused an uproar in the world of football about the extent of the Argentine’s right to win that award.
“From a Bavarian and Polish point of view and also from a German point of view, the presentation of the Ballon d’Or last night was certainly disappointing, for some a little more,” Thomas Muller said on his LinkedIn account.

Fazit: Immer weiter @lewy_official und @FCBayern ! ⚽️💪 #miasanmia #Lewandowski #ImmerWeiter #esmuellert https://t.co/xL0L1Bz46I
He added: “Although I’ve been working in this field for a bit longer and therefore wasn’t really surprised by the result (it was similar to Franck Ribery in 2013), the whole thing formed or solidified an idea inside me, we have great players in the Bundesliga and we shouldn’t hide that, However, more international successes are necessary for global recognition.”
“This is also a great motivation for me to throw everything in the balance in order to bring the Champions League back to Munich, to show what is happening to the world of football and above all, what German football has to offer,” Muller continued.
He continued, referring to the next match against Barcelona in the Champions League scheduled for December 8: “We have the next opportunity to do it next Wednesday in the Champions League match against Barcelona, let us deal with it!”
“Note: With Messi, the selections may have been based on the best individual performance, so congratulations to Lionel for winning the Ballon d’Or, even if I think Robert Lewandowski would have deserved it more this time.”
